Current Mindset (Current Reality): You’re excited to teach a multiplication lesson, but some students don’t know their basic facts. 

Scenario: You are checking in with your coach in the corner of the classroom before the lesson. The students have 5 minutes of silent reading before the lesson begins. You point out one group of students who are struggling. 

The Discourse 1: “I’m teaching a multiplication lesson. I’ve put all the students who can’t do it in one group together over there. They just aren’t going to get it no matter what I do.”
